Higher Than the Heavens

Last week, I touched on self-esteem with my blog, “More Than Many Sparrows”. I mentioned how society bases so much importance on your outside appearance. I posed the question of who sets the standard for beauty in this world. I gave the devil too much glory about what he does to make you feel like you are less than a woman. Forgive me gentlemen, I failed to mention the fact that men are also bombarded with the “ideal” male images all over the media.

I just spoke about your physical appearance last week, but your self-esteem in this world reaches far beyond that. Low self-esteem is a result of many things. You are pressured to keep up with the Jones’. There are some people in this world that expect you to wear certain clothes, live in a large house in a particular neighborhood and drive a nice car. You should have the fanciest cell phone on the market and the newest video game console for your kids. This is pressure for all of you to prove you’re successful. This used to be a stereotype of success primarily for men. However, it is for women now too as more and more women choose to work or have to. Today, I’m going to talk to you, men and women, more about God’s love for you. This is something you must understand in order to get past low self-esteem.

I can’t talk about God’s love for you without starting with John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

It says in this verse that God so loved the world, but there’s something I want to specify to you. The world is made up of many people in many nations, including you. However, God loves YOU so much he would have sent Jesus to die on the cross if you had been the only person on the earth.

It does not matter to God if you are a man or a woman. God doesn’t care what nationality you are or what language you speak. He loves you whether you are a bum under a bridge or the President of the United States. He doesn’t care what kind of car you drive or where you live. As I said last week, He doesn’t care what you look like physically either. He cherishes you and calls you the apple of His eye in Deuteronomy 32:10 and Psalm 17:8.

Let’s go to Psalm 139:17

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand…

You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are the apple of His eye. All the hairs on your head are numbered. His thoughts of you are so many you can’t count them.

It doesn’t matter how ugly you think you are inside or out. It doesn’t matter what mistakes you have made in your life. God loves you despite all your faults and mistakes. Repent and ask for forgiveness and He will forgive you and forget about them. He sacrificed his Son to be able to give you His love and forgiveness. God loves you so much, He wants to give you a fresh start. God sacrificed Jesus Christ for you knowing whether or not you’ll accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Even with that knowledge, He still did it, because He loves YOU.

God loves you like you love your children. He corrects you when you do something you shouldn’t. Do you remember an incident from your childhood where you did something wrong and you were corrected by your mother or father? Do you love your children any less when you correct them? A mother and father correct out of love. God does too. Proverbs 3:11-12 says,

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Think about how much you love your children. Now, imagine that your parents love you just as much. Do you know that only God’s love is unconditional and unimaginable? Do you know that there is no one that loves you as much as God loves you? No one can. God’s love is perfect. He is patient and long-suffering. Moses proclaimed the following on Mt. Sinai, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin…” in Exodus 34:6-7.

There is nothing you have to do to earn God’s love and you will never lose it. You don’t even have to love God back. He loves you anyway. Of course, He wants your love in return, but His love isn’t based on anything you do or say. He’s already proven that with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He sacrificed Jesus for you before you were even born, because He had you in mind. He had every single one of you reading this now in His thoughts when he sacrificed His one and only Son. There is no where you can go and nothing you can do to ever separate you from the love of God.

There is a sweet little storybook I read to my grandson called, Guess How Much I Love You by Sam Mc Bratney. In this book, Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare are telling each other to guess how much each other loves the other one. One illustration shows them stretching their arms out wide. Another shows them stretching their arms above their heads as high as their arms can reach. The book continues on with comparisons between Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare. At the end of the story, Big Nutbrown Hare whispers to Little Nutbrown Hare that he loves him right up to the moon and back.

Imagine if you did that with God. There isn’t any comparison you can make that can ever measure up to how much he loves you. Do you think God loves you to the moon and back? He doesn’t. Psalm 108:4 says God loves you “higher than the heavens”.

Join me next week in my closet. God Bless You!

Beautifully written. It is really hard to grasp just how much God loves us. But, I think you summed it up well by saying: God loves YOU so much he would have sent Jesus to die on the cross if you had been the only person on the earth. That’s awesome, and to think He also loves me to the moon and back!! Great article, Tammee. That should be enough to boast anybody’s self-esteem.

Thank you for the encouraging comment. It has been hard for me to grasp how much he loves me too. I believed that if it was hard for me, it must be hard for others as well. It’s quite wonderful to realize how much he really loves me. The more I grasp it, the more I believe it and the happier I am. I hope others reach that point from reading this post as well.
